In a key administrative development, Mr Vikas Sahay, a senior Indian Police Service officer of the 1989 Gujarat cadre, has been granted a six-month extension in his current role as Director General of Police (DGP), Gujarat. As per the official order, his tenure will now continue from July 1, 2025, to December 30, 2025, beyond his originally scheduled superannuation date of June 30, 2025.
Background and Leadership Journey
IPS Sahay first assumed charge as interim DGP of Gujarat on February 1, 2023, following the retirement of his predecessor, Mr Ashish Bhatia IPS. His leadership was subsequently formalized with his appointment as regular DGP effective March 1, 2025.
With decades of experience in various high-stakes policing and administrative roles, Sahay’s extension reflects the state government’s confidence in his continued stewardship of Gujarat’s law enforcement during a crucial period.
Significance of the Extension
This extension ensures continuity in top-level police leadership and is expected to contribute to maintaining operational momentum across key law and order functions in the state. It also underscores the trend of strategic service extensions granted to senior IPS officers with proven track records.
