UP Police Achieves 93% Conviction Rate Under DGP Rajeev Krishna; AI-Powered Policing, Anti-Mafia Crackdown and Cyber Crime Action Mark Transformative Year
Uttar Pradesh Police secured a remarkable 93% conviction rate under Operation Conviction during 2025-26. DGP Rajeev Krishna highlighted major achievements in crime control, cyber policing, women’s safety, anti-mafia action, AI-powered investigations and road safety reforms.
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police has reported one of its strongest performances in recent years, recording an impressive 93 percent conviction rate under Operation Conviction while simultaneously expanding its fight against organised crime, cyber fraud, and crimes against women. The achievements were highlighted by Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna during a comprehensive review of the force’s performance over the past year.
In his first major media briefing since taking charge as Uttar Pradesh’s first full-time Director General of Police in four years, Rajeev Krishna presented what can best be described as a report card of an increasingly technology-driven police force. The review covered the period between May 31, 2025, and May 31, 2026, and painted a picture of a department that is attempting to combine traditional law enforcement with artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, cyber capabilities, and citizen-focused policing.
The figures presented by the DGP reveal significant gains across multiple fronts, from criminal convictions and anti-mafia operations to women’s safety initiatives and road accident reduction.
Operation Conviction Delivers Record Results
One of the most striking achievements highlighted during the presentation was the success of Operation Conviction, a flagship initiative aimed at ensuring faster and more effective prosecution of criminal cases.
According to official figures, courts disposed of 32,071 criminal cases during the review period. Out of these, Uttar Pradesh Police successfully secured convictions in 29,911 cases, resulting in an extraordinary conviction rate of nearly 93 percent.
The judicial outcomes translated into punishment for a large number of offenders.
A total of 42,681 accused persons were convicted during the year, underscoring what police officials describe as improved investigation standards, stronger evidence collection, and enhanced coordination between investigators and prosecutors.
The severity of several convictions also drew attention.
Among those sentenced:
18 criminals received the death penalty.
3,340 offenders were awarded life imprisonment.
Rajeev Krishna attributed these results to close monitoring of sensitive cases, better investigative practices, and focused efforts under Operation Conviction to ensure that serious offenders are brought to justice.
Relentless Action Against Organised Crime
The campaign against organised crime and mafia networks continued to remain one of the defining pillars of Uttar Pradesh’s law-and-order strategy.
Over the past year, police intensified legal action against gang leaders, habitual offenders, and criminal syndicates operating across various districts.
According to the DGP, proceedings under the Gangsters Act were initiated against 5,684 criminals during the review period.
The financial impact of these operations was substantial.
Authorities attached assets worth approximately ₹788.38 crore, targeting the economic foundations of organised criminal enterprises.
The anti-mafia drive also gathered momentum.
Police action led to the seizure, demolition, or recovery of properties valued at more than ₹336 crore that were allegedly linked to criminal networks or illegally occupied land.
The focused prosecution strategy produced additional results, with ten identified mafia figures and twenty of their associates being successfully convicted during the year.
Officials believe these sustained actions have helped weaken criminal ecosystems while reinforcing public confidence in law enforcement.
Significant Decline in Major Crimes
The annual report also indicated encouraging trends in several categories of serious crime.
According to police statistics, major offences recorded noticeable declines compared to the previous year.
Among the most significant reductions:
Robbery cases fell by 27.8 percent.
Theft incidents declined by 14.4 percent.
Dacoity cases reduced by 11.1 percent.
Murder, burglary, and rioting cases also registered a downward trajectory.
The DGP credited the decline to a combination of preventive policing, improved surveillance systems, intelligence-based operations, and quicker response mechanisms.
Police officials say the increasing use of technology and data analytics has also played a role in identifying crime hotspots and deploying resources more effectively.
Women’s Safety Continues to Receive Special Attention
Women’s safety remained a key priority area throughout the year under Mission Shakti Phase 5.0, one of the state’s flagship initiatives focused on protection, awareness, and empowerment.
To strengthen institutional support mechanisms, Mission Shakti Centres were established across police stations throughout Uttar Pradesh.
These centres are designed to provide integrated support services, guidance, and assistance to women facing safety-related issues.
The scale of the programme is considerable.
According to the DGP:
Approximately 13,500 personnel were deployed for Mission Shakti-related activities.
More than 40,000 police personnel received specialised training focused on women’s safety and empowerment.
Police data also suggested improvements in several categories of crimes affecting women.
Compared to previous years:
Rape cases declined by 34 percent.
Kidnapping of women and girls reduced by 17 percent.
Dowry death cases dropped by 13 percent.
Domestic violence cases declined by 10 percent.
Officials believe that a combination of preventive measures, awareness campaigns, faster intervention mechanisms, and victim-support systems contributed to these outcomes.
Cyber Crime Enforcement Enters a New Phase
As cyber threats continue to evolve, Uttar Pradesh Police has significantly expanded its cyber policing infrastructure.
One of the most notable developments was the strengthening of the state’s dedicated Cyber Crime Call Centre in Lucknow.
Initially operating with 20 seats, the facility has now been expanded to 80 seats, with plans underway to increase its capacity to 200 seats in the near future.
The expansion reflects growing demand for rapid responses to online fraud, digital scams, identity theft, and other cyber-enabled crimes.
The enforcement numbers are equally significant.
During the year:
Cyber fraud-linked funds worth nearly ₹400 crore were frozen through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
More than 1.11 lakh mobile numbers were blocked.
Around 1.22 lakh IMEI numbers were disabled.
Authorities achieved a compliance rate of approximately 91 percent under the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System.
Officials say these measures have substantially improved the state’s ability to respond quickly to cybercrime complaints and limit financial losses suffered by victims.
AI-Powered Yaksh App Revolutionising Investigations
One of the most technologically ambitious initiatives highlighted by Rajeev Krishna was the deployment of the Yaksh App, an artificial intelligence-driven platform designed to assist policing operations.
The application integrates multiple advanced technologies that allow officers to process and analyse information more efficiently.
Its capabilities include:
Facial recognition systems
Voice-based search functions
CrimeGPT-enabled analytical tools
Criminal network and gang analysis
Beat-level monitoring and intelligence mapping
According to police officials, the platform is helping investigators identify repeat offenders, track fugitives, analyse criminal behaviour patterns, and improve decision-making through data-driven insights.
The use of AI tools represents a major step in Uttar Pradesh Police’s efforts to modernise law enforcement and adopt smart policing practices.
Massive Training and Capacity Building Exercise
The force also invested heavily in training and professional development during the review period.
With new criminal laws coming into force and technology playing an increasingly important role in policing, large-scale training became a central focus.
During the year:
More than 60,000 newly recruited constables underwent training.
Over 27,000 personnel received specialised instruction on the implementation of the new criminal law framework.
The DGP emphasized that continuous training remains critical for maintaining professional standards and ensuring that personnel are equipped to handle modern policing challenges.
Road Safety Measures Deliver Encouraging Results
Apart from crime control and law enforcement, Uttar Pradesh Police also reported positive outcomes in road safety.
The state’s Zero Fatality District Initiative showed measurable success during the first quarter of 2026.
According to official data:
Road accidents declined by 7.43 percent.
Road accident fatalities fell by 11.55 percent.
Officials attributed these improvements to stricter enforcement, better traffic management strategies, public awareness campaigns, and targeted interventions in high-risk areas.
Road safety remains an important component of the broader public safety agenda being pursued by the police department.
A New Era for Uttar Pradesh Police
Rajeev Krishna’s presentation carried added significance because it marked his first comprehensive public review since assuming office as Uttar Pradesh’s permanent Director General of Police.
For nearly four years, the state had functioned without a full-time DGP. His appointment brought stability to the top leadership position, and the annual report provided an opportunity to outline the force’s priorities and achievements.
The figures presented reflect a police organisation that is increasingly relying on technology, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and specialised enforcement strategies while maintaining a strong focus on traditional crime control.
From record conviction rates and aggressive anti-mafia operations to AI-powered investigations and expanded cybercrime capabilities, Uttar Pradesh Police appears determined to position itself among the country’s most technologically advanced law enforcement agencies.
As the force moves into the next phase of reforms, officials say the focus will remain on strengthening public trust, enhancing accountability, adopting emerging technologies, and delivering faster, more efficient policing services to the state’s more than 240 million residents.
The past year may well be remembered as one of the most transformative periods in the recent history of Uttar Pradesh Police—a year in which technology, enforcement, and institutional reform came together to reshape the state’s policing landscape.
