In an unusual but strategic move to ensure continuity in senior police leadership, the Andhra Pradesh government has granted a two-year extension to senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta, officially appointing him as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) for a fixed tenure.

A 1992-batch IPS officer, Gupta was scheduled to retire in August 2025. However, under the Supreme Court’s guidelines—which permit a fixed two-year term for DGPs recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)—the state has opted to retain him beyond superannuation.

Formal Appointment Follows UPSC Panel Clearance

Gupta had been holding charge as DGP since February, in addition to his roles as Director General of Vigilance and Enforcement and Ex-officio Principal Secretary in the General Administration (V&E) Department.

The Andhra Pradesh government formally proposed his name for the top post, and the UPSC empanelment committee met on April 30 in New Delhi to assess eligible officers. After reviewing service records and overall merit, the state selected Gupta as the most suitable candidate.

Extension Subject to Conditions

As per the existing rules, Gupta’s two-year tenure is subject to certain conditions. His appointment may be curtailed in cases of disciplinary proceedings, criminal conviction, medical incapacity, mutual reassignment, or other documented administrative reasons.

Strategic Continuity Amid Police Reforms

This rare extension beyond retirement age signals the state’s intent to ensure leadership stability at a time when Andhra Pradesh is preparing to implement key reforms in policing, public safety, and enforcement mechanisms. The government’s decision reflects confidence in Gupta’s leadership and his ability to steer the force through this crucial period of transformation.
