IPS Anurag Dhankar Appointed as New DGP of Tripura

Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Tripura cadre, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. His appointment comes into effect from May 18, 2025, succeeding Mr. Amitabh Ranjan, a 1988-batch officer, who is set to retire later this month.

Mr. Dhankar brings with him over 16 years of policing experience in Tripura, having held several critical roles, including serving as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) between 2013 and 2016. His professional journey also includes multiple high-level central deputation assignments. Notably, he led the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the high-profile Nirav Modi diamond fraud case, and held key positions such as Superintendent of Police, DIG, Joint Director, and Additional Director in the agency.

In addition to his work with the CBI, Mr. Dhankar has served as Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and has contributed to the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Earlier in his career, he also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo during 2003–04.

His appointment was approved by Tripura Governor N. Indrasena Reddy, in consultation with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). With extensive experience across state policing, central investigative agencies, and international platforms, Mr. Dhankar is expected to provide strong, multifaceted leadership to the Tripura Police.
