NCW Warns Birbhum SP of Legal Action
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has reissued a final summons to Birbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Amandeep, a 2014-batch IPS officer, after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing related to alleged verbal abuse by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal.
Case Involves Allegations of Abuse and Women’s Safety
The matter concerns serious accusations involving the dignity and safety of women, particularly family members of an on-duty police officer. The incident has sparked national outrage and intensified scrutiny of institutional accountability.
NCW Rejects Virtual Appearance Request
SP Amandeep was initially summoned to appear before the Commission in New Delhi on July 1. In response, he cited law-and-order responsibilities in Birbhum district and requested to attend the hearing virtually. The NCW declined, citing the gravity of the case and insisting on a physical appearance.
On July 2, the Commission issued a strongly worded final notice, directing the SP to appear in person at NCW headquarters on July 14 at 12:00 PM.
No Further Extensions; Legal Consequences Loom
The NCW has made it clear that no additional extensions will be granted. In case of unavoidable and documented circumstances, the Commission has instructed that either the Additional SP or the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bolpur must attend the hearing, accompanied by all relevant case documents.
Sources informed India Today that failure to comply will be treated as wilful obstruction of a statutory enquiry and may trigger legal proceedings under the National Commission for Women Act, 1990
