ACC Approves Six-Month Extension for West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta Beyond April 2026

In a significant administrative decision, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to extend the service tenure of senior IPS officer Siddh Nath Gupta. Gupta, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer of the West Bengal cadre, is currently serving as the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) of West Bengal.

As per the official order, Gupta has been granted a six-month extension in service beyond his scheduled date of superannuation on April 30, 2026. The extension will be effective in relaxation of Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. This provision allows the government to retain a serving officer beyond the retirement age under exceptional circumstances, particularly when it is deemed necessary in the public interest.

The decision underscores the government’s confidence in Gupta’s leadership and administrative capabilities, especially at a time when continuity in policing and internal security management is considered crucial. Extensions of this nature are typically granted in rare cases where the officer’s experience, ongoing responsibilities, or prevailing law-and-order considerations necessitate their continued service.

Siddh Nath Gupta has had a long and distinguished career in the Indian Police Service, with extensive experience in handling law enforcement, internal security, and administrative functions. As the head of the West Bengal Police, he has been responsible for overseeing the state’s policing framework, maintaining law and order, and coordinating with central agencies on matters related to security and intelligence.

Officials familiar with the development indicate that such extensions are often linked to the need for stability in key positions, particularly in large and sensitive states like West Bengal. The role of the DGP is critical in ensuring effective policing, managing complex security challenges, and implementing reforms within the force. Continuity in leadership can play a vital role in sustaining ongoing initiatives and ensuring seamless functioning of the police administration.

The relaxation of Rule 16(1) reflects the flexibility available within the service rules to address administrative requirements. While the standard retirement age for All India Services officers is fixed, provisions exist to extend tenure in cases where the government believes that the officer’s continued presence would serve a larger public purpose.

Such decisions are taken after careful consideration at the highest levels of government, including inputs from the concerned ministry and other stakeholders. The approval by the ACC, which is chaired by the Prime Minister, signifies the importance attached to the matter.
With this extension, Siddh Nath Gupta is expected to continue leading the West Bengal Police until the end of the extended period, ensuring stability and continuity in the state’s law enforcement machinery. His continued tenure is likely to support ongoing efforts in maintaining public order, strengthening institutional capacity, and addressing emerging security challenges.

Overall, the move reflects a broader administrative approach that prioritizes experience, continuity, and public interest in key governance positions.
