The Competent Authority has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to Shri Ashok Kumar Kaluaram Meena, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Odisha cadre, 1993 batch. Shri Meena is currently serving as Secretary, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Significance of the Assignment
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is one of the most critical ministries in the Union Government, responsible for framing and implementing policies related to environmental protection, forest conservation, biodiversity management, and climate change mitigation. The temporary assignment of additional charge ensures continuity in leadership and smooth functioning of the ministry during the absence of the incumbent Secretary.
Shri Ashok Kumar Meena, with his extensive administrative experience and current role in the Ministry of Jal Shakti, brings valuable expertise in environmental sustainability and resource management. His background in water and sanitation governance aligns closely with the objectives of the MoEFCC, particularly in areas where water conservation and climate resilience intersect.
Administrative Framework
Assignments of additional charge are a routine but essential part of India’s administrative system. They ensure that key ministries do not face leadership gaps when senior officials are on leave or temporarily unavailable. By entrusting Shri Meena with this responsibility, the government has reinforced its commitment to maintaining continuity in policy oversight and administrative efficiency.
Broader Context
This development comes at a time when the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is engaged in several important initiatives, including the implementation of India’s climate action commitments, strengthening forest management programs, and advancing sustainable development goals. The presence of an experienced officer like Shri Meena at the helm, even in an interim capacity, is expected to provide stability and direction to these ongoing efforts.
The assignment of additional charge of the MoEFCC Secretary post to IAS officer Ashok Kumar Meena underscores the government’s emphasis on continuity and effective governance. His temporary stewardship of the ministry during Shri Tanmay Kumar’s leave ensures that critical environmental and climate-related initiatives remain on track, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of India’s administrative framework.
