Who Is IPS Deepak Gahlawat? Haryana-Cadre Officer Arrested by CBI in Alleged ₹3 Crore Bribery Case Linked to ₹5,000-Crore Fake Medicine Scam
A senior Indian Police Service officer with an impressive academic record, a distinguished policing career and an international sporting profile has now found himself at the centre of a high-profile corruption investigation. Deepak Gahlawat, a 2012-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in an alleged ₹3 crore bribery case connected to a massive ₹5,000 crore fake medicine racket.
The officer, who is currently on central deputation and serving as Joint Director-cum-Regional Director in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), has been accused of demanding a substantial bribe from the prime accused in the counterfeit medicine case. According to the CBI, the money was allegedly sought in return for influencing the agency’s investigation and securing relief for the accused.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through administrative and law enforcement circles, particularly because Gahlawat had built a reputation as a capable police officer, an IIT graduate and an accomplished international powerlifter before these allegations surfaced.
CBI Alleges ₹3 Crore Bribe Demand
According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Deepak Gahlawat allegedly demanded ₹3 crore from N. Raja, who has been identified as the principal accused in the fake medicine manufacturing case.
Investigators claim the alleged deal was finalised after discussions between the parties, with an advance payment also being arranged as part of the understanding.
The CBI alleges that Gahlawat assured the accused that he could use his influence to affect the ongoing investigation and help secure a favourable outcome.
After gathering what it described as material evidence during the probe, the agency arrested the IPS officer and produced him before a Delhi court. The court subsequently remanded him to CBI custody, allowing investigators to continue questioning him regarding the alleged conspiracy and financial transactions.
Fake Medicine Investigation Worth ₹5,000 Crore
The bribery allegations have emerged from one of India’s biggest investigations into counterfeit pharmaceutical products.
In 2025, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the CBI and local police authorities, conducted coordinated raids across Puducherry and uncovered what investigators described as a large-scale network engaged in manufacturing spurious and adulterated medicines.
During the searches, officials seized huge quantities of counterfeit medicines, fake packaging material and raw ingredients allegedly used in producing fake pharmaceutical products.
Authorities estimated that the illegal network had a market value of nearly ₹5,000 crore, making it one of the country’s largest fake medicine rackets uncovered in recent years.
The investigation resulted in the arrest of N. Raja, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the alleged operation. As investigators continued examining the case, they reportedly came across information suggesting that several influential individuals, including public officials, might have been linked to the network.
In March 2026, the Central Bureau of Investigation registered a fresh FIR and significantly widened the scope of its investigation.
How Did Deepak Gahlawat’s Name Surface?
According to the CBI, the alleged conspiracy began taking shape during a meeting held in Delhi on May 14.
The agency claims that Delhi Police Crime Branch Inspectors Pradeep Kumar Singh and Rajkumar acted as intermediaries between the prime accused and individuals allegedly capable of influencing the investigation.
Investigators allege that the two inspectors demanded ₹3 crore on behalf of the network, assuring N. Raja that they could manage the CBI probe through their contacts.
The agency further claims that both sides eventually agreed upon an advance payment of ₹1.5 crore.
According to the CBI’s investigation, ₹1 crore was allegedly transferred through a hawala operator to Inspector Pradeep Kumar Singh. Investigators claim the money was later passed on to Prabhat, who is described as an acquaintance of IPS officer Deepak Gahlawat.
The agency believes this alleged money trail forms an important part of the broader conspiracy currently under investigation.
Multiple Raids Conducted Across Locations
As the investigation gathered pace, the CBI carried out simultaneous searches at several locations connected with the accused persons.
During these raids, investigators recovered nearly ₹25 lakh in cash from the residences of Delhi Police Inspectors Pradeep Kumar Singh and Rajkumar.
Overall, the agency seized approximately ₹90 lakh in cash from different locations.
Apart from cash, officials also confiscated hard disks, mobile phones, laptops, digital storage devices and several financial documents. These electronic records are now being examined to establish communication patterns, financial transactions and the alleged movement of funds.
Investigators are also scrutinising banking records and other financial channels in an attempt to identify every individual who may have been involved in the alleged bribery network.

However, his arrest has dramatically altered that public image and placed him under the spotlight for entirely different reasons.
Investigation Still Underway
The CBI has made it clear that the investigation remains active and that more aspects of the alleged conspiracy are being examined.
Officials are continuing to analyse digital evidence, financial records and communication data recovered during the searches. Investigators are also trying to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged bribery network or benefited from the purported transactions.
With one of India’s biggest counterfeit medicine investigations now intersecting with allegations of corruption involving a serving IPS officer, the case is expected to remain under close public and judicial scrutiny in the coming weeks.
