West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta Gets 6-Month Extension Amid Assembly Elections
In a key administrative decision during an ongoing and politically sensitive election period, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a six-month extension in the tenure of West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta. The senior IPS officer, originally scheduled to retire on April 30, 2026, will now continue in office beyond his superannuation.
The move comes at a crucial time when the state is in the midst of Assembly elections, with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in force. Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, was appointed as DGP by the Election Commission of India on March 15, 2026—just a day after the announcement of the election schedule on March 14.
At the time of his appointment, the Commission had removed the then interim DGP Peeyush Pandey and directed that he should not be assigned any election-related responsibilities. Gupta’s appointment was seen as part of efforts to ensure neutrality and effective law enforcement during the electoral process.
The extension of his tenure is widely interpreted as an attempt to maintain continuity in police leadership during a sensitive phase. West Bengal has historically witnessed instances of election-related tension and violence, making stable and experienced leadership within the police force particularly important. With the second phase of polling scheduled for April 29 and counting set for May 4, administrative consistency is considered critical to ensuring free and fair elections.
However, the decision has also sparked discussions regarding post-election administrative arrangements. Typically, once the election process concludes, leadership roles may be reassessed, and previous अधिकारियों could be reinstated. In this case, that could have meant a possible return of Peeyush Pandey. The six-month extension, however, extends well beyond the election timeline, raising questions about the state’s future policing leadership.
Observers suggest that the final direction may depend on multiple factors, including the outcome of the Assembly elections and the position taken by the incoming or continuing state government.
