Gujarat IPS Association Seeks EC Action Against AAP MLA Gopal Italia Over ‘Derogatory’ Poll Remarks

In a development that has sparked fresh debate over political discourse during elections, the Gujarat chapter of the Indian Police Service Association has formally approached the Election Commission of India, seeking action against Gopal Italia, an MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), over alleged derogatory remarks made against police personnel during an ongoing election period.

The controversy originates from a Facebook Live broadcast conducted by Italia on April 26, which quickly went viral across social media platforms. According to the memorandum submitted by the IPS Association, the MLA allegedly used “inflammatory and inappropriate language” while referring to senior police officials and personnel. He also reportedly questioned the neutrality and functioning of law enforcement agencies and election authorities, suggesting bias in the enforcement of rules during political activities.

In its representation, the IPS Association described the remarks as “abusive, defamatory, and derogatory,” calling them a direct affront to the dignity of the police force. The memorandum was signed by Association President Gyanender Singh Malik, who also serves as the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, along with Secretary Nipuna M Torawane. The body emphasized that while democratic systems allow criticism of public institutions, such criticism must remain within the bounds of decency and responsibility.

The Association further highlighted the timing of the remarks, noting that statements of this nature during an active election phase could have far-reaching consequences. Police personnel are tasked with maintaining law and order and ensuring the smooth conduct of elections, often under high-pressure conditions. Allegations that undermine their credibility without substantiated evidence, the Association argued, risk eroding public trust and lowering the morale of officers engaged in critical duties.

Additionally, the IPS Association has flagged the issue as a potential violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which governs the behavior of political leaders and parties during elections. The memorandum urged the Election Commission to take appropriate action to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process, maintain institutional credibility, and ensure accountability among political actors.

Copies of the memorandum have also been sent to senior अधिकारियों, including the Principal Secretary of the Home Department and the Director General of Police, Gujarat, underscoring the seriousness with which the matter is being treated.

The incident once again brings into focus the growing influence of social media in shaping political narratives, especially during elections. With statements capable of reaching millions within minutes, the responsibility on public figures to exercise restraint becomes even more critical.

As the election process continues, all eyes are now on the Election Commission’s response, which is expected to set an important precedent regarding the boundaries of political expression and the protection of institutional integrity during democratic exercises.
