In a major administrative reshuffle, the Karnataka government has appointed senior IAS officer Tushar Giri Nath (1993 batch, Karnataka cadre) as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Urban Development Department (UDD). This decision follows the retirement of Umashankar S.R. (IAS: 1993: KN), who stepped down after serving as ACS, UDD, and Administrator of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Giri Nath, who previously held the position of BBMP Chief Commissioner, will now also take on additional responsibilities as ACS of the Home Department and BBMP Administrator. This dual charge underscores the government’s trust in his leadership amid ongoing urban governance reforms.
His appointment was widely expected, with sources earlier hinting to legendofficers.com that he was the top contender for the UDD role. In his new capacity, he will oversee key initiatives, including the formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the reorganization of municipal boundaries—critical steps in the state’s urban development agenda.
Meanwhile, Maheshwar Rao M. (IAS: 1995: KN) has been named the new Chief Commissioner of BBMP. He will continue in his current role as Managing Director of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), ensuring seamless coordination between civic administration and metro rail development.
These appointments highlight the state’s emphasis on robust leadership in urban governance as Karnataka pushes forward with infrastructure and administrative reforms.
