MHA Approves Central Deputation of Two IPS Officers; Surendra Kumar Jha Posted to BSF, Sandeep Kumar Garg Joins NIA
In a significant administrative move aimed at strengthening India’s internal security and investigative framework, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the central deputation of two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the Jharkhand and Punjab cadres. The appointments place the officers in key leadership roles within two of the country’s most crucial security organisations — the Border Security Force (BSF) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The decisions were cleared through separate official orders issued by the competent authority under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The appointments are part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to reinforce senior leadership positions in national security agencies through the induction of experienced IPS officers from different state cadres.
Ministry of Home Affairs Clears Key Deputation Appointments
According to official communications, Surendra Kumar Jha has been appointed as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Border Security Force on a deputation basis.
A 2010-batch IPS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, Jha was previously serving as DIG (Personnel) at the Jharkhand Police Headquarters in Ranchi. During his tenure in the state police establishment, he handled personnel administration and other important organisational responsibilities within the police department.
The Ministry approved his appointment under the standard terms and conditions governing central deputation assignments for All India Services officers. His posting to the BSF is expected to add experienced leadership to the paramilitary force, which plays a critical role in safeguarding India’s international borders and handling border-related security challenges.
The BSF, one of India’s largest border guarding forces, functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs and is responsible for maintaining vigilance and security along sensitive frontiers. Senior IPS officers deputed to the force are often entrusted with strategic operational and administrative responsibilities.
Sandeep Kumar Garg Posted to National Investigation Agency
In another important appointment, the Ministry has approved the deputation of Sandeep Kumar Garg as Deputy Inspector General in the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Garg is a 2012-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre and was serving in the Punjab Police Intelligence Wing at SAS Nagar (Mohali) before his transfer to the Centre. He held the position of DIG in the intelligence setup and was associated with intelligence coordination and security-related operations in the state.
His appointment to the NIA comes against an existing vacancy in the agency. The National Investigation Agency is India’s premier counter-terrorism investigation body and is tasked with probing cases related to terrorism, organised crime, national security, terror financing and other offences affecting the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
Officials believe that Garg’s experience in intelligence operations and policing in Punjab — a strategically important border state — will be valuable in his new assignment at the NIA.
Move Aimed at Strengthening National Security Framework
The deputation of senior IPS officers to central agencies remains a crucial mechanism for strengthening coordination between state police forces and national security institutions. Officers serving on central deputation bring field-level operational experience, intelligence expertise and administrative knowledge from their respective cadres.
The latest appointments come at a time when India’s security agencies are focusing on enhancing operational preparedness, intelligence-sharing mechanisms and inter-agency coordination amid evolving internal and cross-border security challenges.
Both the BSF and the NIA remain central pillars of India’s security architecture. While the BSF is responsible for border management and frontline security operations, the NIA leads high-profile investigations into terrorism-related cases and national security threats across the country.
The appointments of Surendra Kumar Jha and Sandeep Kumar Garg are expected to further strengthen the leadership capabilities of these critical institutions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
