MP: Theft of Sandalwood Tree from IAS Officer Bungalow – 3 Suspects Identified

Sandalwood Tree Stolen from IAS Officer Vivek Kumar Porwal’s Bhopal Bungalow; Three Suspects Identified

In an unusual theft that has raised questions about security in one of Bhopal’s prominent VIP residential areas, three individuals allegedly entered the official bungalow of senior IAS officer Vivek Kumar Porwal and cut down and stole a sandalwood tree. The incident reportedly occurred between 2 am and 2:30 am in Char Imli, a residential locality near the official residence of the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP).

The theft took place despite the presence of a security guard at the bungalow. According to police officials, the suspects have been identified, and efforts are underway to locate and arrest them.

Additional Police Commissioner Shailendra Singh Chauhan confirmed that three individuals had entered the residence of a senior officer within the jurisdiction of Habibganj police station and removed the sandalwood tree. Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish how the suspects gained access to the premises and escaped.

The incident has attracted attention because of the commercial value of sandalwood and the location of the bungalow in an area where several senior government officials reside.

Sandalwood Tree Cut Down During the Night

According to the available account, the suspects entered Porwal’s official residence during the early hours of the morning, cut down a sandalwood tree growing on the property and fled with it.

A security guard was reportedly present at the bungalow but failed to notice the theft. Police indicated that the guard may have been asleep when the incident occurred. The theft came to light after it was reported to the police. A team subsequently visited the location and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators are examining surveillance footage from nearby areas to trace the suspects’ movements before and after the theft. The inquiry is also expected to establish how the individuals entered the premises and whether any lapses in the security arrangements contributed to the incident.

Chauhan said police had identified three suspects following the initial inquiry and examination of available surveillance footage. Efforts were continuing to trace their whereabouts and secure their arrest. The investigation remains focused on establishing the precise sequence of events and determining responsibility for the theft.

Security Concerns in Bhopal’s VIP Residential Area

The incident has drawn attention to security arrangements in Char Imli, a prominent residential area associated with senior government officials. The reported presence of a security guard at the bungalow has raised questions about how three individuals allegedly managed to enter the property, cut down a tree and leave without being detected.

Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the suspects’ movements and the possibility of any security lapses. The findings of the investigation will be important in establishing how the theft occurred.

Sandalwood is a commercially valuable tree, making it a potential target for theft. The incident has therefore also highlighted the challenges involved in protecting such trees, particularly on properties where security arrangements are expected to be in place.

However, the precise circumstances of the incident and the responsibility of the individuals identified by police will be established through the investigation and due process of law.

Who Is IAS Vivek Kumar Porwal?

Vivek Kumar Porwal is a senior Indian Administrative Service officer belonging to the 2000 batch of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. Over more than two decades in public service, he has held a range of administrative assignments covering district governance, urban administration, revenue management and policy implementation.

As of October 2026, Porwal is serving as Principal Secretary of the Mineral Resources Department of the Madhya Pradesh government. His career has included both field-level administrative responsibilities and senior positions within the state government.

He has worked in areas including revenue administration, urban governance, energy management, industrial development and digital governance. His assignments have involved coordinating government departments, implementing public programmes and overseeing administrative processes.

Porwal was born on February 21, 1971. His reported educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and an M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering. His technical background has been followed by administrative assignments involving public policy, infrastructure and government operations.

Some biographical profiles also mention a PhD in Economics from IIM Indore, although this qualification should be verified against official records before publication as a confirmed fact.

From District Collector to Senior Secretariat Positions

During his career, Porwal has served in several districts of Madhya Pradesh, including Jabalpur, Dhar, Balaghat, Narsinghpur, Singrauli and Tikamgarh. As District Collector and District Magistrate, he was responsible for district administration, coordination among government departments, implementation of welfare programmes and oversight of public services.

He also served as Commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation, gaining experience in urban administration and municipal governance. These assignments provided experience in handling district-level administrative responsibilities before he moved into senior positions in the state government. His subsequent roles involved broader policy coordination and departmental administration.

Role in the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office

Porwal has also served in the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office, where his responsibilities included work connected with departments such as Aviation, Cooperation, Public Relations, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

These assignments involved coordination across departments, monitoring government programmes and supporting the implementation of state-level priorities. His experience in the Chief Minister’s Office complemented his earlier district-level responsibilities, extending his work from local administration to broader policy and governance matters.

Cyber Tehsil and Digital Governance Reforms

One of the governance initiatives associated with Porwal’s work in revenue administration is Madhya Pradesh’s Cyber Tehsil project. The initiative introduced digital processes for eligible land mutation and revenue services, aiming to make specified procedures paperless and faceless.

By reducing the need for repeated visits to government offices, the system was designed to make land-related services more accessible and reduce procedural delays. The wider objective of such reforms is to improve transparency, simplify administrative procedures and facilitate citizens’ access to property-related information.

Digitisation also offers government departments tools to manage records more efficiently and improve access to information, although the effectiveness of individual reforms depends on their implementation and continued oversight.

Experience in Energy and Public-Sector Organisations

Porwal has held leadership positions in organisations associated with Madhya Pradesh’s power management and renewable energy sectors. According to the supplied career details, he served as Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company and the state’s Renewable Energy Company during 2021–2023. He has also held responsibilities associated with the Madhya Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation.

These assignments broadened his administrative experience to include energy management, public-sector operations, industrial development and infrastructure-related governance.

Current Role in the Mineral Resources Department

As of October 2026, Porwal is serving as Principal Secretary of the Mineral Resources Department of Madhya Pradesh. The department is responsible for administrative and regulatory matters concerning the state’s mineral resources and mining sector. Its work includes implementing government policies and overseeing the administrative framework governing mineral-related activities.

The position involves coordination on policy and administrative matters in a sector that contributes to the state’s economy and public revenue. While the sandalwood theft has brought unusual public attention to Porwal’s official residence, his administrative career has largely centred on district governance, revenue reforms, digital administration and senior government responsibilities.

The police investigation into the theft is continuing, with efforts focused on locating the three identified suspects and establishing the circumstances in which the tree was removed from the bungalow.
