Veteran Bureaucrat Takes Over with Just 61 Days Left Before Retirement

In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle, the Government of Maharashtra has appointed senior IAS officer Rajesh Kumar Meena (1988 batch, Maharashtra cadre) as the new Chief Secretary of the state, succeeding Sujata Saunik, who retired today. Saunik, a 1987-batch officer, made history as the first woman to hold the Chief Secretary post in Maharashtra.

Who is Rajesh Kumar Meena?

Hailing from Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, Rajesh Kumar Meena is known for his administrative expertise, efficiency, and extensive experience across various departments in Maharashtra. Prior to his elevation, he served as Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue), where he played a key role in shaping policy and implementing reforms.

A 1988-batch officer, Meena is regarded as one of the most seasoned and respected bureaucrats in the Maharashtra cadre.

A Moment of Pride for Rajasthan

Meena’s elevation to Maharashtra’s top bureaucratic post has sparked pride in his home state, particularly in Sawai Madhopur, where local residents are celebrating the achievement. His appointment underscores the growing prominence of Rajasthani officers in top administrative roles nationwide.

Short but Significant Tenure

Taking charge just 61 days before his superannuation in August 2025, Meena’s appointment is notable for its brevity. However, the move reflects the state government’s confidence in his leadership during a critical phase, entrusting him with the responsibility of steering the administrative machinery with efficiency and continuity.

Farewell to Sujata Saunik: A Trailblazing Legacy

With Meena stepping into the role, Sujata Saunik’s historic tenure comes to a close. As the first woman Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, she led several governance and service delivery reforms and championed administrative modernization. Her departure marks the end of a landmark chapter in the state’s bureaucratic history.

Rajesh Kumar Meena’s appointment ushers in a new phase of leadership in Maharashtra’s bureaucracy — a brief but potentially impactful chapter, as the state navigates key policy and governance priorities in the run-up to his retirement.
